Jänschwalde Power Station, Lignite power station in Peitz, Germany

Jänschwalde Power Station is a lignite-fired facility near Peitz with six generating blocks and a total output capacity of roughly 3,000 megawatts. The site sits directly adjacent to open-pit mines from which brown coal is continuously extracted.

Construction began in 1976 and the facility became operational in 1988. Following German reunification, environmental technology was upgraded to meet international standards.

This power station shaped Brandenburg's industrial identity and remains visible from many miles away. For local residents, it represents decades of economic activity that supported entire communities in the region.

The site is visible from the surrounding landscape and impresses with its industrial scale, though public access to the facility itself is typically not permitted. Information centers in the region offer insights into the area's industrial heritage and energy production.

Three 300-meter cooling stacks were dismantled between 2002 and 2007 using equipment that worked systematically from top to bottom. The confined space on the industrial site demanded this unconventional demolition approach.
