Hammerschmidt Villa, Presidential residence in Gronau, Bonn, Germany
Hammerschmidt Villa is a white neoclassical residence and architectural heritage monument in Gronau, Bonn. The building stands beside the Rhine in a five-hectare park with rare conifers and sculptures.
Architect August Dieckhoff erected the house in 1860 as a private residence. From 1950 to 1994, it served as the official seat of the Federal President before Berlin became the capital again.
The floor plan follows classical reception patterns with rooms on the ground level used for diplomatic meetings. Staff prepare the halls for visiting heads of state, while the garden with its old trees provides a setting for formal outdoor appointments.
The presidential standard flies above the building when the head of state is present. Visitors can tell from this whether the residence is in use on a particular day.
The property includes a historic palm house with a glass dome, a billiard salon, and a shell room extending over 40 meters (131 ft). These auxiliary buildings date from the original 19th-century layout.
