Ottweiler, town in Saarland
Ottweiler is the district capital of Neunkirchen in the Saarland region of Germany, with a compact old town of narrow lanes and stone facades. The skyline is defined by the Zibbelkapp, a medieval defense tower with a slate roof and a large clock face.
Ottweiler grew during the Middle Ages as part of the Nassau-Saarbrucken territory and served for a time as a residence for local nobility. The Witwenpalais, built in the 18th century, is a visible reminder of that period when the town held an important role for the regional ruling family.
The market square in Ottweiler hosts a street market twice a week where locals shop for fresh produce and flowers. The square remains a natural meeting point for people from the town and nearby villages.
The tourist office in the Hesse House on the market square offers information about guided tours from April to October. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since most of the old town is paved with cobblestones.
The Schulmuseum in Ottweiler traces the history of school life across many centuries through original objects like slate boards and old textbooks. It is one of the few museums in Germany dedicated entirely to the history of education.
