Montabaur, District capital in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Montabaur is a municipality in the Westerwald at 230 meters elevation in Rhineland-Palatinate. Buildings spread across gentle hills with residential areas, shops and green spaces between forested slopes.
The settlement emerged in the 13th century as a fortified stronghold under Archbishop Dietrich von Wied. Designation as district capital followed the Prussian administrative reform in the 19th century.
The name comes from the biblical Mount Tabor and recalls the medieval foundation by the archbishop. Catholic services and church festivals still shape daily life for many residents in town.
The InterCityExpress station lies outside the center and offers fast connections to Frankfurt and Cologne. Local buses run between the station and downtown, where shops and restaurants concentrate.
The yellow castle from medieval times now serves as a conference hotel and academy for cooperative banks. The elevated position in the Westerwald provides fresh air and wide views over forested hills.
