Special Weapons Depot Himmelpfort, Nuclear weapons storage facility in Fürstenberg/Havel, Germany
The Special Weapons Depot Himmelpfort is a former Soviet military facility set within a forested area near Fürstenberg/Havel. The two underground storage bunkers are built from reinforced concrete and now sealed, surrounded entirely by trees and forest.
The Soviet military established this depot between 1967 and 1968 to store nuclear warheads intended for possible transfer to East German forces. The facility was a key part of Soviet security strategy in Eastern Europe during that period.
The site shows how closely the Soviet Union and East Germany worked together militarily during the Cold War. Walking through the area, you can sense the weight of that partnership and what it meant for the region.
The sealed facility is not open to the public and is managed by the Oberhavel district administration. The grounds can be viewed from outside, but there is no access to the bunkers or the interior of the site.
Each storage chamber was designed to hold up to 20 nuclear warheads, which were secured in specialized insulated containers. This construction method shows the strict safety standards that were required for storing nuclear weapons at the time.
