Bendlerblock, Military building complex in Tiergarten, Germany.
Bendlerblock comprises several interconnected buildings in neoclassical style that enclose an inner courtyard near Tiergarten park. The facades of pale stone appear restrained and symmetrical, while the central yard now serves as a memorial space.
Until 1944, the ensemble served as headquarters for German naval command and other military offices. In July of that year, the complex became the starting point for an attempted overthrow of the regime, which ended with the arrest and execution of several officers.
The site now houses a memorial dedicated to those who resisted the National Socialist government, displaying documents and personal testimonies from participants. Visitors find exhibition rooms where the actions of individuals and groups become tangible and understandable.
The memorial opens Tuesday through Sunday and offers guided tours as well as exhibition spaces on the second floor. Entry is free, and information is available in several languages.
Bronze sculptures stand in the courtyard, marking the spot where officers were executed following the failed assassination attempt of 1944. Memorial plaques list the names of those involved and identify the execution site.
