Auerberg, Mountain peak in southern Hesse, Germany.
Auerberg is a mountain peak in southern Hesse that rises as part of the Odenwald range overlooking the Rhine Valley plain. The summit features castle ruins that crown the hilltop and can be reached through hiking trails and roads.
The castle was founded in the 13th century by Count Diether IV of Katzenelnbogen dynasty and served as a regional fortress. The ruins visible today are all that remains after the fortress was eventually abandoned.
The castle ruins on this peak served as a powerful symbol of regional authority and control over trade routes. Today, visitors can see how the structure reflected the importance of this location in medieval times.
The mountain can be reached by a steep road with parking available near the castle ruins at the top. Multiple hiking trails connect the summit to surrounding areas and offer different routes for visitors.
Two accessible towers remain from the castle and allow visitors to climb for views across the Rhine Valley below. These preserved structures offer a rare chance to experience the height and vantage point that once made this fortress so strategically important.
