Velmerstot, Mountain peak in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Velmerstot is a mountain massif in the Egge range with two summits, the highest reaching 468 meters. The terrain features sandstone formations and is dominated by heathland, birch, and pine stands that spread across gentle to steep slopes.
The mountain area hosted NATO and Dutch air defense installations during the Cold War, which were removed in 2002. This military past later made way for the landscape that serves as a nature park today.
The mountain forms part of the Teutoburg Forest Nature Park and defines the regional landscape with its distinctive heathland and pine forests. Visitors experience a terrain shaped by traditional land use practices that span generations.
Visitors can climb the 17-meter Eggeturm observation tower to enjoy views of the surrounding mountain regions. The viewing platform provides orientation aids to help identify the different landscapes of the Teutoburg Forest, Weser Highlands, and Sauerland.
The slopes are covered with blueberries and the ground hosts numerous heather shrubs as well as birches and pines shaped by centuries of grazing. This vegetation results from a long tradition of land use that continues to define the appearance of the mountain landscape.
