Ihme-Zentrum, Building complex in Linden-Limmer, Germany.
The Ihme-Zentrum is a large housing complex in Hanover's Linden-Limmer district that sits on concrete supports above the Ihme River. The structure encloses apartments, shops, and offices connected by interior corridors and staircases that form the inner passages.
The project arose in the 1970s as a response to housing shortages and postwar urban planning goals in Germany. Architects aimed to combine residential and commercial functions in a single integrated structure over the river.
The complex shows how residents and workers share daily spaces, blending homes, shops, and offices in a single structure that shapes neighborhood life. The exposed concrete and angular forms create a distinctive visual identity throughout the district.
The site is easily accessible on foot with good bus connections at the nearby Spinnereistraße stop. The open areas allow walks through covered galleries and along the river, best explored during daylight hours.
The most striking feature is how broad walkway bridges span the river, connecting the upper level to the neighborhood while leaving the waterway open below. This bold design allowed dense housing to be built without blocking the river.
