Bahnbetriebswerk Arnstadt, Railway museum and workshop in Arnstadt, Germany
The Bahnbetriebswerk Arnstadt is a historic railway depot with 22 locomotive bays housing steam, diesel, and electric locomotives from different eras. The buildings and equipment date from around 1900 and show how a railway maintenance facility was organized and operated.
The facility started in 1868 as a small two-bay workshop and grew steadily until the current building complex was completed in 1898. This growth reflects the expansion of railways during the Industrial Revolution.
The place is maintained by railway enthusiasts who keep the historic machines and workshops active. This hands-on work shows how people today still use and pass on older technology.
Visits are by appointment only and work best for groups of around 10 people or more, with guided tours available. Special events happen around Easter and in September, making these times particularly worthwhile for a visit.
The site has a 23-meter rotating turntable that can be powered by electricity, compressed air, or manual effort. This machine demonstrates how railway workers once turned and positioned locomotives without needing modern electronics.
