Bahnbetriebswerk Nürnberg West

Bahnbetriebswerk Nürnberg West is a railway maintenance facility in the Gostenhof district with several large workshop halls of varying sizes. These halls serve today for the maintenance of S-Bahn trains and other regional trains operated by Deutsche Bahn.

The facility was founded in 1869 as a maintenance workshop at the Central Station and initially employed hundreds of workers to service numerous locomotives. It underwent significant transformations to adapt to changing railway technologies and operational needs.

The facility's name reflects its western location beyond the city center and shows the importance of railway infrastructure to Nuremberg's development. Visitors can observe the large halls that demonstrate the scale of modern train maintenance operations.

Visitors can view the facility from street level and observe the architectural structure of the workshop halls. Coming during morning hours provides the best views when maintenance activities are most visible.

A major fire in 2005 completely destroyed the historic circular locomotive shed and several preserved locomotives. This event led to fundamental structural rebuilding of the site and continues to shape how the facility appears today.
