Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen, Aviation museum next to Friedrichshafen Airport, Germany
The Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen is an aerospace museum beside Friedrichshafen Airport. Its hangar, designed by Allmann Sattler Wappner, follows the outline of an airport taxiway branch and covers 5,590 m², with lighting by James Turrell. Outside, between the building and the runway, stand aircraft including a Dornier Wal replica and a Breguet Atlantic; inside are large aircraft and satellite models.
Claude Dornier founded his company and developed aircraft that broke records and introduced new technologies. The museum was founded in 2009 to showcase these innovations.
The museum displays how aircraft designers worked through preserved machines and equipment from different eras. You can see how engineers solved flying problems in their time.
The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday and allows enough time to view all the exhibits. The restaurant in the building has a terrace overlooking the runway, where you can watch planes landing and taking off.
The Baracke Seemoos, a wooden hut standing by the car park, is considered the nucleus of the Dornier company; it was rebuilt at this site in 2016. The museum building's floor plan follows a taxiway branch of Friedrichshafen airport, and the light installations were designed by James Turrell.
