Kloster Löwental

Kloster Löwental is a Dominican monastery near Friedrichshafen that includes a Baroque church from the 17th century and former service buildings. The complex sits close to Lake Constance and still shows the layout of a medieval monastic operation.

The monastery began in the mid-1200s and was first called Himmelwonne before taking its current name. After secularization in the early 1800s, the complex lost its religious role and was used for military purposes.

The monastery served as a spiritual center for Dominican nuns who lived and worked here for centuries. Visitors can still sense the religious purpose of the place through the layout of the church and the surrounding rooms.

The grounds sit conveniently near Lake Constance and are easy to reach by car or public transport. Plan enough time to explore the different buildings and outdoor areas at a relaxed pace.

The monastery received land grants from the Habsburg family and operated its own grain mill called Trautenmühle. This economic success allowed the community to prosper for many centuries.
