Balve Cave

The Balve Cave features a Y-shaped passage extending 150 meters in length, with an entrance portal measuring 18 meters wide and 12 meters high.

Archaeological excavations in the early 19th century revealed over 53,000 artifacts, including tools from ancient hunter-gatherers and remains of prehistoric fauna like cave bears.

The cave transforms into a performance space hosting theater festivals, music concerts, and an annual marksmen's festival that has continued for more than 160 years.

Groups of ten or more visitors can access the cave through prior appointments, with complete wheelchair accessibility and capacity for 2,000 people indoors.

Mining operations for phosphate-rich clay during the 1830s altered the original archaeological layers while uncovering numerous prehistoric discoveries.
