Becelaere-Kaserne, Military building in Hohenkreuz district, Esslingen am Neckar, Germany
Becelaere-Kaserne is a military barracks complex in Esslingen am Neckar featuring classical architecture with hipped roofs, dormers, and triangular gables. The buildings are arranged around a rectangular parade ground.
The barracks opened in 1914 as Esslingen's first independent military facility, designed by military inspector Graser. Its construction followed the sale of Hohenkreuz Castle by Baron Carl Alexander von Palm.
The barracks takes its name from Becelaere near Ypres, a place where Infantry Regiment No. 125, Second Battalion, fought during World War I. This connection links the site to that military chapter.
The site was renovated between 1956 and 1961 and housed Medical Battalion 10 until the late twentieth century. The parade ground now includes an underground parking facility while keeping the historical buildings intact above.
An underground parking facility was built beneath the parade ground, adapting the site for modern use while preserving the original architecture above. This solution shows how historical sites can be functionally renewed.
