Basilica St. Clemens, Catholic basilica in Mitte district, Hannover, Germany
The Basilica St. Clemens is a Catholic church in the Mitte district featuring two flanking towers and an Italian-influenced cupola that represents northern German baroque architecture at its height. The interior combines local craftsmanship traditions with southern architectural elements throughout its walls and vaults.
Construction of this Catholic church began in 1712 under architect Tommaso Giusti and marked the first Roman Catholic building in Hannover after the Reformation period. The structure arose during a time when Catholic buildings were being reestablished across the region.
The interior displays religious artworks from northern Germany, while the architecture follows Venetian design principles throughout. This blend of local tradition and southern European forms shapes how the building feels to visitors today.
Access is available on most weekdays when the building is open to visitors. The entrances are designed to be barrier-free, so people with limited mobility can move in and out without difficulty.
This building is the only ecclesiastical structure in northern Germany constructed entirely in pure Italian architectural style. It was designed and built under Italian direction, displaying craftsmanship details rarely found elsewhere in the region.
