Museum Kunst der Westküste, Art museum in Alkersum, Germany
Museum Kunst der Westküste is an art museum in the village of Alkersum on the North Frisian island of Föhr, focused on paintings and graphics related to coastal and maritime themes. The works span roughly a century of art history and come from artists across northern Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia.
The museum opened in 2009 as the result of a private foundation that wanted to make a coastal art collection available to the public. It was built on Föhr specifically to house the collection, which had been assembled over many years before the museum itself existed.
The collection brings together works by artists from several countries who spent time along the North Sea coast and painted what they saw in their daily surroundings. Many of the paintings show ordinary coastal life rather than grand scenes, which gives the whole collection a grounded, human quality.
The museum sits in a small inland village on Föhr, so having a bicycle or a vehicle makes it easier to reach, especially since the island has limited public transport options. A visit fits naturally into a day spent exploring the island, as the museum is located near the center of Föhr.
The museum building was designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup and was built around an existing farmhouse on the property, which remains part of the complex today. The contrast between the old farmhouse and the new structure is visible as soon as you arrive on site.
