Kelley Barracks, Military base in Stuttgart, Germany.
Kelley Barracks is a United States military installation in Stuttgart's Möhringen district that serves as headquarters for United States Africa Command. The compound includes administrative buildings, housing facilities at Kelley Hotel, medical services, and various support services for military personnel.
Originally built in 1938 as Helenen-Kaserne for the German Luftwaffe, the site became an American military center in 1945 after World War II. This transition marked the beginning of long-term United States military presence in Stuttgart.
The base is named after an American soldier and serves as a symbol of German-American ties in the region. Official ceremonies and community events here bring together international military personnel and local representatives.
The base is located in southeastern Stuttgart and can be reached by public transport or car, though access to many areas is restricted to authorized personnel. Visitors should check access requirements beforehand, as much of the facility is not open to the public.
Until 2018, two tanks—an M4 Sherman and an Iraqi T-72—stood at the base entrance as memorial pieces honoring past operations. Their removal marked a shift in how the installation displays its history.
