Bernward Doors, Bronze doors at Hildesheim Cathedral, Germany
Two bronze door leaves measuring 4.72 meters in height display sixteen panels of biblical scenes cast in relief at the west entrance.
Bishop Bernward commissioned these bronze doors in 1015, making them the oldest figural door panels from medieval times in Germany.
Eight panels on the left door present Old Testament scenes while eight panels on the right door depict New Testament narratives.
Visitors enter the cathedral through side entrances, allowing the preservation of these medieval bronze doors in a protective vestibule.
Each door leaf weighs 1.8 tons and was cast in a single piece using the lost-wax technique, demonstrating exceptional medieval metallurgy.
