Forstbotanischer Garten Tharandt, Botanical garden and arboretum in Tharandt, Germany.
The Forstbotanischer Garten Tharandt is a botanical garden and arboretum in Tharandt, Saxony, set on sloping ground with wide paths winding through trees and shrubs from many parts of the world. It holds one of Europe's largest collections of cold-hardy woody plants.
The garden was founded in 1811 by Heinrich Cotta as part of a forestry academy, making it one of the world's earliest scientific tree collections. This close link to forester training shaped the place from the very beginning.
The garden belongs to Dresden University of Technology and serves as a working place for forestry and botany students. Visitors often come across researchers or students taking samples and identifying plants among the trees.
The garden is open from March through October and is easy to explore on foot, with marked paths leading through the whole site. Guided tours for groups can be arranged on request.
The Schweizerhaus, built in 1842 in a Swiss architectural style, holds a small forestry museum and a garden shop. This building is a reminder of the close ties that existed between German and Swiss foresters during the 19th century.
