Schliersee, Alpine lake in Bavaria, Germany

Schliersee is an alpine lake in the Bavarian region situated at 777 meters elevation and surrounded by forested slopes. It reaches depths of about 40 meters and contains a small island near its center.

The lake takes its name from a monastery founded around 779 nearby, which shaped the surrounding region's development. This religious center helped establish settlements in the area and influenced local growth over centuries.

The lake serves as a gathering place for swimmers, sailors, and anglers throughout the year. Local sailing clubs host regular competitions that visitors can watch from the shoreline.

The lake features a swimming area on its eastern shore with restaurant facilities and visitor amenities. Summer offers the best water temperatures for swimming, though the site remains accessible year-round.

Wörth island, the lake's only island, is the above-water part of a massive east-west dam that divides the lake into two basins. A guesthouse stands on the 2.4-hectare island. Since 1982, compressed-air lines in both basins have mixed the water, after Burgundy blood algae had turned it blood-red in the 1970s.
