Schloss Hexenagger, Medieval castle near Altmannstein, Germany
Schloss Hexenagger is a fortification near Altmannstein in Bavaria with a curtain wall, four towers, and a wing-shaped structure surrounding an interior courtyard. The southwestern tower displays Romanesque features and shapes the overall appearance of the complex.
The Lords of Hexenagger controlled the fortress from 982 until 1480, when it transferred to Count Jorg von Helfenstein through marriage. This period of rule reflected the local power dynamics and family connections among the region's noble families.
The two chapels built in the 17th century display religious architecture from that period. One tower stands out for its blind arches and onion dome, which define the castle's outer appearance.
The castle is privately owned and does not permit public interior visits, though it can be rented for events. Visitors can explore the exterior grounds and view the details of the walls and towers from outside.
Along the Schambach river, a historical forge for weapons and hammers once operated, showing the industrial side of the medieval settlement. These workshops supplied the castle and surrounding area with necessary metal tools and armor.
