Maschen Marshalling Yard, Classification yard in Seevetal, Germany
Maschen Marshalling Yard is a railway classification facility in Seevetal that spreads across a vast area and is equipped with infrastructure for forming trains. The site has two separate systems for opposite directions of travel, multiple sorting and maintenance zones, and numerous track arrangements.
Planning for the facility began in the 1960s when the port city of Hamburg needed more modern infrastructure. Upon completion, it replaced four smaller yards in the surrounding area.
The facility plays a key role in freight movement between northern Europe and the rest of the continent. It connects Hamburg directly with destinations in Scandinavia and Central Europe.
The site is very large and consists of several zones that can be explored from a central vantage point. Visitors should allow adequate time and remember that this is an active railway facility.
During ground preparation, millions of cubic meters of peat and sand were excavated, creating several lakes. These water bodies are now used as recreational areas by locals and offer an interesting contrast to the railway facility.
