Großer Kranichsee

Großer Kranichsee is a nature reserve in Eibenstock and Muldenhammer located at approximately 950 meters elevation. The protected area features raised bog systems and serves as a natural watershed between two river valleys.

The reserve received official protection status in 2008 with strict conservation measures implemented to maintain its ecological character. This legal framework ensures the long-term preservation of the wetland system.

The reserve extends across the German-Czech border, where cooperation between both countries ensures the protection of this extensive bog landscape.

Access to the reserve is via marked trails that allow observation of the bog landscape without disturbing sensitive zones. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and expect wet, boggy terrain conditions.

The bog area supports specialized plant species like bog bilberry and bog rosemary adapted to the harsh high-altitude environment. These rare plants are found in few places across Europe, making the site botanically significant.
