Coleman Army Airfield, military airbase and barracks in Germany
Coleman Army Airfield is a military base and barracks in Mannheim, Germany, primarily used today for storing equipment and vehicles. The facility contains storage halls, maintenance areas, and modern warehouses where armored vehicles and military supplies are kept ready for rapid deployment across Europe.
The facility was founded in the 1920s as a civilian airport serving various airlines for passenger and cargo transport. After 1937, it was converted by Nazi Germany into a Luftwaffe base that housed fighter aircraft during World War II and later served as a prisoner of war camp.
The facility is located about 1 kilometer north of Mannheim city center and is well connected by highways and rail lines. Keep in mind this is an active military base, so public access and movement are restricted.
After the US Army took control, the base was temporarily called Y-79 and initially served for storing surplus vehicles. Until 2014, it housed the only US military prison in Europe before that facility was closed.
