Wiesenburg Castle, Renaissance castle in Wiesenburg/Mark, Germany
Wiesenburg Castle is a hilltop castle complex in Wiesenburg/Mark, Brandenburg, combining medieval, Renaissance, and neo-Renaissance construction phases in one site. The compound includes a cone-shaped tower, stone walls, a wide terrace, and a surrounding park with ponds and wooded areas.
The site began as a medieval fortress in the 12th century and was rebuilt in the Renaissance style following a fire in 1550. A second major transformation between 1864 and 1880 gave the castle most of the neo-Renaissance features it has today.
The keep hosts small exhibitions where visitors can see how building styles in this part of Brandenburg changed over the centuries. The castle park is used by locals for walks, giving the grounds a relaxed, everyday feel rather than a purely tourist one.
Entry to the grounds is through the Tourist Information Centre in the gatehouse at the edge of the castle park. The terrain is uneven and hilly in places, so solid footwear makes the visit more comfortable.
A stone fountain from the early 17th century still stands in the courtyard in its original position, which is rare for an outdoor feature of this age. The Männeken Gate carries a carved figure above its entrance that is considered a local symbol but is rarely mentioned in guidebooks.
