Birdwood Barracks, Military barracks in Rödinghausen, Germany.
Birdwood Barracks is a former military facility occupying roughly 27 hectares adjacent to the Löhne-Rheine railway line in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex now functions as an industrial area housing various businesses, including a major logistics center for food distribution.
The barracks were built in 1952 and housed British Rhine Army units until 1993, serving as a Cold War strategic post. Their four decades of operation marked a significant period of Allied military presence in the region.
The site brought together British soldiers and local residents, particularly in nearby Bünde where military personnel spent their leisure time. These everyday connections left a lasting impression on the community during the post-war decades.
The former military site is now private industrial property and generally not open to public access. The area can be viewed from outside along the railway line, though visitors should be aware it remains an active business zone.
The site once hosted helicopter units equipped with Skeeter aircraft, a rare chapter in the aviation history of this region. This specialized air unit role remains largely unseen today, yet represents an important aspect of the facility's legacy.
