Nonnenstein, Mountain summit in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The Nonnenstein is a mountain in the Wiehengebirge range standing 274 meters high, topped with an observation tower built from steel and wood. The tower offers open views across the surrounding hills and landscape extending toward the Hermannsdenkmal monument.
The summit was recorded at 325 meters until the 1960s, when improved surveying techniques corrected the height to 274 meters. This remeasurement showed that the peak stood lower than its neighboring summits in the range.
The mountain takes its name from an old legend about a woman who entered a convent after losing her suitor in a duel. This story remains connected to how people think about and experience the place today.
The mountain is reached via several forest paths that connect to the European long-distance trail E11 and the Wittekindsweg route. Hikers and families can choose from multiple entry points and routes depending on fitness level and available time.
A sandstone Bismarck Beacon stands about 100 meters from the observation tower, built in 1911. This six-meter column displays a medallion of the former chancellor and remains an unexpected monument from the imperial era.
