Steinfeld Abbey

Steinfeld Abbey is a monastery complex where a basilica with eight bays forms the central structure. The building displays Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque features, with six chapels integrated into the overall layout.

The site began as a settlement and became a monastery in 1070, later transforming into a Premonstratensian community in 1130. It attained abbey status in 1184.

The name reflects the flat terrain where monks chose to settle in solitude. Today the complex houses a school, yet the basilica remains the spiritual focal point where locals and visitors encounter religious art and community history.

A craftsman created remarkable stained glass windows here that eventually traveled to England, where many panels are now displayed in a famous London museum. These works reveal how this monastery's artistic influence extended far beyond its walls.
