Hanstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Bornhagen, Germany

Hanstein Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a hilltop above the Werra River in the Eichsfeld region, with stone walls, towers, and gateways that reveal its former defensive purpose. The remains spread across the hilltop and offer views down toward the river valley.

The fortress was first recorded in 1070 when Emperor Heinrich IV ordered its destruction, later falling under the control of the Counts of Northeim. A reconstruction took place in 1308 by Heinrich von Hanstein, giving the site its lasting name.

The castle grounds host medieval festivals and exhibitions that celebrate the region's past and bring together local communities. These gatherings reveal how much the place means to people in the Eichsfeld area.

Access to the fortress is via marked hiking trails starting from Bornhagen, with guided tours available to explore the fortifications. Wear sturdy shoes because the ground is uneven and some paths climb steeply.

During Germany's division, one of the towers served as a border surveillance post for East German guards because the ruins sat near the inner German border. This Cold War role adds an unexpected chapter to its story.
