Cospudener See, Recreational lake in Leipzig, Germany
Cospudener See is a large recreational lake near Leipzig covering 436 hectares with maximum depths around 54 meters. A paved path extending approximately 10 kilometers circles the entire shoreline, offering routes for walking, cycling, and other outdoor pursuits.
The area was an active lignite mining operation until 1992, when extraction ceased and flooding of the site began. The lake took its present form and full water level by the year 2000 through this transformation from an industrial site.
The lake is part of the Neuseenland region where locals come together for water sports, swimming, and community gatherings throughout the year. People naturally congregate at the sandy beach and waterfront areas, creating a social space for families and groups.
The lake sits at the border of three municipalities - Leipzig, Markkleeberg, and Zwenkau - making it accessible from multiple entry points. Parking areas and public transit options are available from various locations around the shore.
The harbor area accommodates approximately 200 boat berths and features the region's only sauna with direct access to the lake's water for bathing. This unusual amenity sets the location apart as a distinctive destination for relaxation by the waterside.
