Güntersburg, Medieval castle ruin in Harzgerode, Germany
The castle ruins extend across 3 hectares on Kohlberg hill at 485 meters elevation, overlooking the Selke valley in the Harz mountains.
Initially constructed during the 11th century, Güntersburg first appeared in records around 1326 and was documented as abandoned by approximately 1600.
Archaeological excavations in the 20th century revealed numerous artifacts from the 11th and 12th centuries, indicating a substantial medieval settlement.
The remaining foundations of two gatehouse towers and fragments of the 150-meter defensive ditch provide insights into medieval fortification techniques.
Local folklore tells of a merchant's daughter appearing as a white figure near the castle ruins, carrying a set of keys at night.
