Güntersburg

Güntersburg is a medieval castle on Kohlberg hill near Harzgerode that survives today as a ruin. The remains include two gatehouse towers and defensive ditches that show how this fortification was designed and organized.

This settlement began in the 11th century and first appeared in written records during the early 14th century. By the late 16th century it was already abandoned and gradually became the ruin we see today.

The site takes its name from a medieval ruler and sits on a hill that once served as a center of power in the area. Visitors can see how this location shaped the region's early development and identity.

The site sits on a hilltop with views over the surrounding landscape and can be reached on foot. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and there are steps to navigate.

Excavations in the 20th century uncovered many medieval objects that show a substantial settlement once thrived here. These discoveries help visitors today understand how active and populated this place once was.
