Osterseen, Group of lakes in Bavaria, Germany
The Osterseen is a group of about 23 lakes near Iffeldorf in Bavaria, spread across a large area with clear water and diverse wetland and moorland environments. The system displays different habitats with reeds, wet meadows, and forested shores that together form a special ecosystem.
These lakes formed at the end of the last ice age when melting ice blocks left deep depressions across the landscape. The geology of the area still shows traces of these glacial processes today in the form of kame and esker structures.
The lakes serve as an educational site where visitors learn about geological processes through informative displays explaining the formation of kames and eskers.
A system of marked paths connects the lakes and allows visitors to explore the different habitats on foot. Parking areas and information boards are located at several access points with guidance for walking the routes.
The area is home to rare carnivorous plants like butterwort and sundew that trap insects with sticky leaves. These plants have adapted to the nutrient-poor conditions of the moorland.
