Schloss Hohenberg, Architectural heritage monument in Seeshaupt, Bavaria, Germany

Schloss Hohenberg is a villa-like country house built in 1890 by the Munich firm Ziebland & Kollmus on the 693-meter Buckelsberg west of Seeshaupt. It has an asymmetrical composition with a corner veranda, a transverse gable and stepped half-hipped roofs in historicist forms. The estate also includes a former stable and coach house from 1890 (extended in 1907), an ice cellar from around 1903 and a square machine house with a tall tent roof from around 1890.

Hohenberg was first documented in 1135 in connection with the Augustinian monastery of Bernried, founded fifteen years earlier. In 1873 Konstantin Schägger, owner of the Hohenberg estate, opened an inn there; in 1889 the inn and its chapel were sold to Karl Freiherr von Podewils. He had the Munich firm Ziebland & Kollmus build a hunting villa, called Schloss Hohenberg, in 1890 on the 693-metre Buckelsberg to the west. The estate passed to Wilhelm Schertlin von Burtenbach in 1897, to Willibald Freiherr von Beck-Peccoz in 1903 and to the Thurn und Taxis family in 1931; Philipp Ernst Prinz von Thurn und Taxis acquired the forest estate with the hunting lodge, and the present owner is Prinz Emmeram von Liechtenstein.

The name Hohenberg was first recorded in 1135 in connection with Bernried Abbey. In 1873 Konstantin Schägger opened a tavern on the Hohenberg estate; in 1889 it was sold to Karl Freiherr von Podewils, who had the hunting villa built in 1890. Since 1931 the estate has belonged to the Thurn und Taxis family.

The castle is located in Seeshaupt and can be reached via regional roads connected to the Bavarian road network. It makes sense to wear comfortable shoes since the grounds and paths vary in their condition.
