Schloss Hirschberg am Haarsee, Castle near Haarsee, Bavaria

Schloss Hirschberg am Haarsee is a three-story castle with a rectangular form featuring neo-baroque elements and an ionic column portico. The building overlooks Lake Haarsee with several terraces that frame views across the water and surrounding landscape.

The castle was built between 1907 and 1909 by architect Carl Hocheder for the Hirschberg family. After its completion, it later served as a guesthouse for the Foreign Office and was repurposed for other uses afterward.

The interior showcases early 20th-century craftsmanship with a grand two-story entrance hall, library, and numerous reception rooms. The spaces reflect the tastes of a wealthy family who valued elegant architectural details and refined living.

The castle sits in a quiet lakeside location with good viewing spots from the terraces. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear, as the grounds are hilly and require climbing several levels.

The castle hosted important meetings during World War II and was later used as a training facility. This dual role connects it to different chapters of European history in an unexpected way.
