Lister Turm, Historic watchtower in Zoo district, Hannover, Germany
Lister Turm is a tower and event venue in Hannover's Mitte district, with its current structure dating from 1895. The building contains a main hall seating 400 people, a smaller room for 60 guests, and operates as both a restaurant and café.
The original tower was built in 1387 as part of Hannover's medieval fortifications and was eventually destroyed. In 1895, architect Hermann Schaedtler reconstructed it in romantic style, recreating the forms of the medieval structure.
The name comes from the nearby Lister street and today the building serves the community as a gathering place for events. Regular performances, concerts, and cultural programs bring different groups together in these spaces throughout the year.
The venue is accessible for various events and has multiple spaces of different sizes for different purposes. Visitors should check ahead to learn what functions are happening on any given day, since the building's use changes daily.
During the early 1930s, the building was used as an unofficial prison with a basement used for torture. A memorial plaque inside the building honors the victims from that period.
