Hooksiel, Coastal district in Wangerland, Germany
Hooksiel is a coastal settlement on the North Sea with a broad sandy beach stretching about four kilometers and several water channels for drainage. The village developed around its historic harbor, where old buildings and modern art galleries sit side by side.
First mentioned in 1479 as 'uppe dem Hoeke,' the settlement became the main port for the merchant city of Jever from the 16th century until 1870. This long trading relationship shaped the village's development for centuries.
The Künstlerhaus Hooksiel presents contemporary art exhibitions and regularly offers cultural programs for children and adults. This former harbor building in the center invites visitors to discover local artists and contemporary works.
The place offers various accommodations including hotels, vacation apartments, and a camping site with permanent resident spaces. Visitors can find options for both short stays and longer holidays by the North Sea.
Storage buildings from 1821 still stand at the Old Harbor, showing the maritime trading traditions of this North Sea settlement. Such well-preserved examples from the early trading period are rare to see today.
