Burg Blankenburg, Medieval castle in Wolfshagen, Germany

The limestone castle stands 300 meters above sea level, featuring Renaissance architecture with Baroque modifications and an octagonal royal church.

Emperor Frederick Barbarossa captured and plundered the castle in 1182 during a siege led by Bishop Dietrich of Halberstadt.

The castle served as a residence for the House of Welf, hosting notable figures including Elizabeth Christine before her marriage to Emperor Charles VI.

Visitors can access the castle through the A36 motorway and B27 federal roads, with parking facilities available near the entrance.

A carved head remains embedded in the castle wall, marking the 1386 overnight raid by Dietrich of Wernigerode during Count Busso's absence.
