Castle Blankenheim, Medieval castle in Blankenheim, Germany.

Castle Blankenheim is a fortified structure standing on a hilltop above the village, combining architectural features from different periods. The building displays a mix of medieval defensive elements and Baroque design details that reflect distinct phases of its development.

The original fortress was founded in the early 12th century and served as the residence of the noble Blankenheim family for many centuries. After this ruling line ended, the structure changed hands several times before being adapted for a new purpose.

The name comes from the noble family who ruled the region for centuries and left their mark on the surrounding lands. Visitors walking through the rooms today experience spaces that once housed aristocrats and were later transformed for entirely different purposes.

The castle now operates as a youth hostel and is primarily open to registered overnight guests. Those wanting to explore the interior should plan an overnight stay or inquire in advance about any daytime visiting options that may be available.

An underground water channel built in the early 15th century carried water from a natural spring over a considerable distance to supply the castle. This engineering solution shows how nobility of that era employed practical technical knowledge to ensure their comfort.
