Burg Borghausen, Medieval castle ruins in Attendorn, Germany
Burg Borghausen is a castle ruin situated on a rocky outcrop northwest of Attendorn that dates to the 12th century. The site sits at an elevation of around 288 meters and consists mainly of foundation traces and scattered stones.
The castle was built in the 12th century as part of the medieval fortifications in the region. It was destroyed in 1632 during the Thirty Years War by forces from Hesse and Sweden.
The site held significance for local populations over centuries as a refuge and defensive position. Artifacts uncovered there show that people continuously occupied and maintained the location from the Middle Ages onward.
The site is only accessible on foot and requires sturdy footwear due to uneven ground and rocky formations. Visitors should be aware that wheelchair access is not possible and a reasonable level of fitness is needed.
Over centuries, locals collected stones from the castle and reused them for their own buildings and constructions. This gradual dismantling left only the deeper foundations visible, along with scattered rock formations.
