Burg Breisach

Burg Breisach consists of medieval fortress ruins perched on the Münsterberg plateau above the town. Stone walls and a wide moat formed the main defenses of this stronghold.

The fortress was founded in 1155 and gained imperial status in 1315 as it was strengthened with major fortifications. War in the 17th century inflicted severe damage that ultimately led to its decline.

The Tulla Tower, built in 1874 near the ruins, commemorates Johann Gottfried Tulla and reflects how locals honor their regional heritage. It shows what matters to people living here today.

A detailed model of the original structure is displayed at the city museum in Breisach, offering clear insight into how it looked. Exploring the ruins themselves requires sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven.

The original keep was a rectangular tower that rose prominently above the landscape, displaying distinctive features of medieval German fortification design. Its proportions reveal how medieval builders approached defensive architecture at that time.
