Burg Ramsberg, Medieval castle ruins in Heiligenberg, Germany
Burg Ramsberg is a medieval castle ruin in Heiligenberg situated at about 650 meters elevation. The ring wall remains partially intact and has been incorporated into the current Messnerhaus building.
The castle was built around 1067 by the Counts of Ramsberg. It suffered damage during the Thirty Years' War despite having been expanded in the 15th century.
The St. Wendelin Chapel on the grounds displays Romanesque and Gothic features. Visitors can still see frescoes from the 15th century that remain partially intact.
The ruin is reachable via a hiking trail starting from the Großschönach cemetery that passes through young moraine landscape. Access is available year-round and the route presents moderate difficulty.
A Benedictine monk currently resides in the Klause St. Benedikt building on the grounds, maintaining the site's connection to monastic traditions. This living use is uncommon for medieval ruins.
