Burg Reichenstein, Castle ruins in Neckargemünd, Germany
Burg Reichenstein is a castle on the northern section of Hollmuth ridge near Neckargemünd. The structure features remnants of medieval sandstone walls and a moat system that reflects its original defensive design.
The castle was built around 1220 by the Staufer dynasty as an imperial fortress. Later the Knights of Muren managed it before it passed to the Electorate of the Palatinate.
The ruins attracted Heidelberg students during the Romantic period as an outdoor destination. Today visitors walk through the wooded site and enjoy the sense of stepping back into medieval times.
The site is accessible through marked paths, with parking available close to the entrance. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since access involves woodland trails.
Archaeological excavations in 1989 during the construction of a water reservoir uncovered numerous objects from the 13th and 14th centuries. These findings reveal how daily life looked during those medieval periods.
