Burg Rettenberg, Medieval castle ruins in Rettenberg, Germany.
Burg Rettenberg is a castle ruin located at 1020 meters elevation on the northern ridge of Rottach Mountain. The stone remains reveal the layout of a medieval fortress that once stood on this high ground overlooking the Illertal valley.
The site was first documented in 1130 under the name Adelprecht de Rotinberch. Ownership passed from the Lords of Rettenberg to the Diocese of Augsburg around 1350.
The medieval construction methods are visible in walls made of Nagelfluh stone blocks and distinctive herringbone patterns from the 13th century. These building techniques reveal the craftsmanship and engineering knowledge of the era.
The ruins sit about 600 meters northwest of Großdorf village. Access has been restricted since 2013 due to the risk of falling rocks from the unstable structure.
The site preserves two latrine consoles at its western corner, offering a glimpse into practical daily life during medieval times. Visible traces of extensive renovation work from 1534 show how the structure was maintained centuries after its founding.
