Burg Ehrenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Ilmtal, Germany
The castle ruins stand at 420 meters above sea level on a limestone cliff, featuring a 25-meter-high tower and walls up to 2.5 meters thick.
Built between 1100 and 1400, the castle belonged to the Counts of Schwarzburg until it was captured and damaged during the Saxon Fratricidal War of 1448.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the castle in August 1777 and created drawings of the ruins, connecting the site to German literary heritage.
The castle ruins belong to the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation since 1995, with external fortification walls reaching heights of 13 meters.
The rectangular main tower measures 7.0 by 10.5 meters and contains three round bastions within its defensive structures.
