Burg Satzvey, Medieval moated castle in Mechernich, Germany.
Burg Satzvey is a medieval castle in Mechernich surrounded by moats and located on an island within the Veybach stream. The structure displays fortified walls, defensive towers, and a functioning drawbridge that guards the main entrance.
Early medieval structures occupied the site before the current castle was built in 1396 under Heinrich von Krauthausen. The fortress served as a strategic defensive position for the region throughout the following centuries.
The castle takes its name from the Vey stream that flows around the island, and today it functions as a venue for events celebrating local traditions. Visitors experience medieval life through markets and celebrations held on the grounds.
The outer courtyards are freely accessible year-round, allowing visitors to explore the exterior grounds at no cost. To see inside the castle, you will need to join a guided tour that provides access to the interior spaces.
Inside the castle, the Hall of Bourbon Lilies features burgundy tapestries decorated with golden fleurs-de-lis and can accommodate around 460 people. This room continues to serve as a venue for larger gatherings and celebrations today.
