Untere Burg, Water castle in Mechernich, Germany
Untere Burg Antweiler sits on an artificial island in the Veybach river and is surrounded by fortified walls that rise directly from the water. The complex contains multiple buildings with residential and service functions arranged around a central courtyard.
The castle was built between 1396 and 1406 as a defensive stronghold for the region. Over the centuries it was rebuilt and expanded several times to meet changing needs and circumstances.
The name refers to the castle's location at a lower point along the river's course, a detail still visible in how the landscape is shaped. The layout shows how nobles chose to build their living quarters directly above the water to combine defense with control.
The grounds are reached by a stone bridge connecting the mainland to the main gate. Parking is available nearby, and the location is accessible for visitors with standard mobility needs.
At the center stands a four-story residential tower built from rough-cut stone, positioned on a raised section of the island. This tower gave its residents a commanding view over the surrounding land and the river.
