Burg Kirspenich, Medieval castle in Bad Münstereifel, Germany
Burg Kirspenich is a castle in Bad Münstereifel with a square residential tower standing about 28 meters high, situated on an island and surrounded by protective walls and water defenses. The ring wall encloses several auxiliary buildings, forming a complete medieval defensive complex.
Construction of the castle began in the second half of the 12th century, with the main residential tower built during the 13th and 14th centuries. The auxiliary buildings within the ring wall were added later, during the 14th and 15th centuries, gradually completing the complex.
The castle displays one of the region's early mansard roofs, reflecting building practices from the 17th and 18th centuries. This roof style was a modern innovation at the time, showing how owners adapted their homes to contemporary standards.
The castle remains in private ownership, but certain areas can be booked for events through the official reservation system. Visitors should check ahead to see if the property is accessible on their intended date or what special occasions might be offered.
The complex features a square residential tower that has stood on an island for centuries, making it one of the few surviving examples of medieval island fortifications in the region. This particular layout made the castle exceptionally difficult to access by force.
