Scharfenstein Castle

Scharfenstein is a stone castle built on an elongated hilltop above the Zschopau valley and surrounded by protective walls. The complex includes several buildings and a tall watchtower that offers views across the surrounding landscape.

The castle was built around 1250 by the Waldenburg family and took control of several nearby villages in the region. After a rival fortress fell into decline, it expanded its influence across the surrounding area.

The castle houses exhibitions on regional crafts from the Ore Mountains, which visitors can explore throughout its rooms and museums. The collections reveal the skills and traditions that people in this area have practiced over many generations.

Visits take place through guided tours that lead visitors through the historical rooms and exhibitions at a comfortable pace. Climbing the tower is possible and provides broad views across the surrounding landscape.

A devastating fire in 1921 destroyed much of the castle, but reconstruction followed the original architectural plans closely. This allowed the building to retain its historical form and show visitors today what an authentic medieval complex looked like.
