Burg Schmitthof, Medieval castle in Lehrbach, Germany.
Burg Schmitthof is a fortified estate with a residential building and thick surrounding walls located near Lehrbach. The structure preserves three of its original four corner towers and shows traces of a former moat system.
The fortification was built in 1538 by the Schenck family from Schweinsberg. It was constructed on the site of Reissdorf village, which had been abandoned in 1427.
The castle displays medieval defensive building techniques with its thick walls and corner towers still visible today. Visitors can see how water-based protection once worked through the remnants of the surrounding moat system.
The estate lies northwest of Lehrbach in the municipality of Kirtorf. It remains in private ownership, so exterior access is limited, but the outer structures are visible from the surrounding area.
The castle underwent major restoration work between 1977 and 1979 that saved the deteriorating structure. This work preserved the original character of the fortification for future generations.
